In line with our commitment to building a strong and inclusive data science community in Ghana, the Ghana R Users Community successfully organized a Women-Focused and Men-Focused Mentorship Program held virtually from 9th February to 9th March 2026.
The one-month mentorship program brought together 22 dedicated mentees from different backgrounds who were eager to strengthen their skills in R programming, data analysis, and data visualization.
A Practical and Insightful Learning Experience
Throughout the program, mentees participated in interactive virtual sessions that focused on practical learning and real-world applications of R. The mentorship sessions were intentionally designed to be down-to-earth, engaging, and supportive, ensuring that participants could follow along regardless of their experience level.
Participants explored key areas such as:
* Introduction to R and RStudio
* Data manipulation and cleaning
* Data visualization using *ggplot2*
* Practical hands-on exercises with real datasets
* Problem-solving and collaborative learning
Mentors guided participants step by step, encouraging them to ask questions, experiment with code, and develop confidence in applying R for research, analytics, and decision-making.
Encouraging Diversity and Inclusion in Data Science
One of the core objectives of the mentorship program was to create equal opportunities for both women and men* in the data science ecosystem. By intentionally encouraging participation from women while also welcoming men, the program fostered a balanced, collaborative, and inclusive learning environment.
This initiative aligns with the Ghana R Users Community’s broader mission of supporting women in data science and strengthening mentorship pathways for emerging R users across Ghana and beyond.
Active Participation and Engagement
With 22 mentees actively participating, the program saw consistent engagement across all sessions. Participants shared ideas, worked through coding challenges together, and supported each other in learning new concepts.
The interactive nature of the mentorship sessions created a community-driven atmosphere, where learning was not only instructor-led but also enriched through peer collaboration.
Building the Next Generation of R Users
By the end of the program, mentees had gained practical exposure to R programming tools and techniques, positioning them to continue exploring data science, research, and analytics in their respective fields.
The Ghana R Users Community remains committed to nurturing talent, building capacity, and expanding opportunities for aspiring data scientists through mentorship, training programs, conferences, and community collaborations.
Looking Ahead
Although the formal mentorship sessions have concluded, participants are encouraged to remain active within the Ghana R Users Community, continue practicing their skills, and participate in upcoming programs, including workshops, community meetups, and the Ghana R Conference.
Together, we are building a vibrant and supportive R ecosystem in Ghana and across Africa.
